A few months ago I participated in a tag where one of the questions posed was what actor/ actress I would run away with. My answer was James Spader because I am slightly obsessed with the character Raymond “Red” Reddington on The Blacklist. That question however, got me thinking about authors I would job shadow for a day just to have an idea of what goes into the process of creating a bestselling novel. These are the authors I would follow around for a bit in a non-creepy way, in no particular order:
COLLEEN HOOVER: I have read every book by Colleen Hoover minus one – November 9 – and her writing always takes my breath away. As someone who appreciates unique writing styles and art in the form of poetry; I adore Colleen Hoover for mixing the two in her books. She makes this list because I would love to get a peek into her writing process and see how she gets inspired to create her characters that I have no difficulty connecting with.
JODI PICOULT: It’s no secret that Jodi Picoult is one of my favourite authors. She never fails to surprise me with her plot twists and story lines that only have one thing in common – they are all mind blowing! Her books are all based on thorough research and facts that leans toward the controversial side in just the right kind of way. I imagine her going on trips across the globe in order to walk in the shoes of the characters she creates. And because each book is different from the next, I like to think shadowing her would be an adventure of a lifetime!
GILLIAN FLYNN: After the bestseller, Gone Girl, I shared a similar thought with most people – what kind of person thinks up such a disturbing plot?? Then I read Dark Places and I was left even more intrigued by this author with the ability to kick the ‘chilling’ factor up a notch. Gillian Flynn is the queen of suspense; and following her around for a day would answer so many questions about her work; like whether or not she watches Dexter reruns every night to get her creative juices flowing!
TAHEREH MAFI: Even though I wouldn’t regard Shatter Me as a favourite of mine; it is still a book I really enjoyed. I follow Mafi on Instagram and she seems like an awesome person who knows how to have a good time; and owns her individuality by expressing her differences. Her feed is filled with her adventures and eccentric sense of fashion that I can’t help but love. Following her around would most likely be a ton of fun!
J.K. ROWLING: I know, I know; this is an obvious choice for so many people. I guess I am not the unique snowflake I often think I am… But come on, I am more than a decade late with the bandwagon jumping when it comes to reading the Harry Potter books! And let me make myself perfectly clear before I continue – I LOVE the HP movies; but I only truly appreciated the series once I started reading the books a few months ago. It takes a certain kind of dumb-ass to not appreciate J.K. Rowling’s imagination for thinking up those stories. Despite knowing what went on behind the scenes, I think every fangirl/boy would jump at the chance to get a first hand experience of the creative process that lead to those books.
