There is no denying that social media plays a big role in the books I’ve tend to be gravitating towards in recent months. Particularly Instagram – my favourite of the hundreds of platforms at my disposal. I am becoming much more aware of this however, because the books that are on everyone’s minds (and news feed) is not always the book that I find enjoyable. Even so, it still has an influence on me. These are a few books that I can now admit I read because it was featured on every second bookstagrammer’s account…
THE LUNAR CHRONICLES BY MARISSA MEYER: Cinder was the first book I read because of Instagram. When I started my Bookstagram account last year and found this whole other world of booknerds and bibliophiles that I had no clue existed up until that moment, I was overwhelmed by all the books that people were talking about. I came across The Lunar Chronicles during this time and when I strolled down the isles of my local bookstore after a particularly rough day at work, I found Cinder. I adore this series; so my first Instagram book quest was successful and because of this, I had a lot of faith in the community.
FANGIRL BY RAINBOW ROWELL: Last year this book was all over my news feed on Instagram. It seemed like every single bookworm on the planet read Fangirl, and about 99.9% of those bookworms loved the book so much that they have about 5 different editions on their book shelves. It unnerved me, because I wanted to read it, but each and every time I had the chance to get a copy for myself, I put it back down and walked out of the store with a different book. When I finally bought myself the paperback, I struggled to get into it, and when I reached the last page I honest to God could not understand what all the fuss was about.
I’LL GIVE YOU THE SUN BY JANDY NELSON: One of my favourite bookstagrammers – Blue Eyed Biblio – could not stop talking about this book last year. After reading her review, I became intrigued myself, and needed to get my hands on a copy. While I won’t go as far as saying that IGYTS is a favourite of mine, I have to say that it is a beautiful story and it was well worth the read. It was another hard yes for bookstagram from my side, and I think this was when Instagram became my new favourite platform to find books – Goodreads has been my favourite for years!
SHATTER ME BY TAHEREH MAFI: I was never really into the fantasy genre before I started my bookstagram account. I preferred to read historical fiction and contemporary romance novels. But I decided to broaden my reading horizons last year and I started with Shatter Me since it was another highly popular book featured on all my favourite bookstagram accounts and the cover is flippen beautiful! I really enjoyed the story line, but the reason I didn’t rate it as such was because of the way it started. The book was filled with over the top metaphors that really annoyed me. I did, however, enjoy how fast pace the story was and it really kicked off my new interest in fantasy novels.
THE YOUNG ELITES BY MARIE LU: After I read Shatter Me I wanted to read more books from the fantasy genre and started asking around for some recommendations. One of the more popular series is The Throne of Glass books by Sarah J. Maas, but since the series has about 5 books under its name I went for The Young Elites. But before I even knew what the book was about exactly, I fell inlove with the cover when I saw pictures of it on Instagram. Marie Lu’s writing style in this book was incredible, and the way she brought her characters to life was brilliant. I am so happy to be following this series right from the start!
