In the years that I’ve purchased books for my personal library, I’ve come to notice that I picked up some annoying bookish habits along the way that I am positive I share with lots of readers out there…
BUYING BOOKS WHEN I HAVE A SKY HIGH PILE STILL TO BE READ: I have so many books on my shelf that I need to read but I am easily distracted by new and interesting stories. Now, before you get all judgy, I am a strong willed person and there is very little that can sway me; but a good book is my weakness! When I walk into a store and see something I’ve heard about, I can’t help but grab it. It’s a sickness; I know! Too bad I am in no rush to find a cure. Books is the one guilty pleasure I allow myself to have; and I will gladly make the necessary sacrifices in order to add a new one to my collection.
READING A BOOK BECAUSE EVERYONE SAYS IT’S AWESOME: I have fallen into this trap more times than I care to admit. Since I discovered bookstagram, it has become much easier for me to see what bookworms from across the globe are all wrapped up in. The problem with this though, is that half the time books enjoyed by other readers are not at all my cup of tea! When I dislike a book that has been hyped about online I feel even more disappointed than being let down by something I discovered on my own.
JUDGING A BOOK BY ITS COVER: This is probably one of the first lessons we learn while growing up. You’d think as an adult I would know better than to judge a book by its cover; but I keep making the same mistake over and over again. I either read a book because the cover is pretty, or I barely give it a chance after being put off by an ugly looking cover. More often than not, it will be the bad cover than leaves me pleasantly surprised. Despite experiencing this so many times, I am way too stubborn to learn my lesson and stop the cycle.
READING MORE THAN ONE BOOK AT A TIME: This reading habit annoys me the most because it puts me in an awful reading slump. If you check out my Goodreads profile you will see that I have plus/minus 10 books which I am “currently reading”. The problem with me reading more than one book at a time is that I get distracted by the book I am NOT reading at a particular moment. I will then go on to read another book because I lost all focus and need to take a break from my current read. Some of the books on my “currently reading” list has been on there for years, since I stopped reading it altogether and went on to find something newer and more gripping. If I take too long to complete a book I usually lose interest and the suspense fades away until there is no point in me reading anymore. It frustrates me that there could be incredible books I missed out on due to this.
GUESSING THE TWIST IN THE TALE: After you read a certain number of books you get a feel for what to expect in a story, and you tend to piece together the plot twist before it even happens. About 90% of the time my guess is right – which is SO ANNOYING because it takes that surprised, ‘WTF just happened’ feeling out of the whole experience. I am by no means saying that it takes away everything that comes with a good story; there is so much more to a good book than the plot twist. But if a book manages to blind side me with something completely unexpected, it makes my ‘favourites’ list almost 100% of the time.
Do you have any annoying book/reading habits that you picked up without realizing it?
