It is June, and we are officially half way through 2016 – scary, right? But I’m not here to discuss how quickly the months are rolling by because I have to share the books I read during the month of May.
May was not my best reading month which was disappointing after the awesome amount of books I read in April; so this means I am about 2 books behind schedule on my Goodreads Reading Challenge for the year… Despite all of this, I would like to share the books I read during the month of May:
SINCERELY, CARTER BY WHITNEY GRACIA WILLIAMS
Whenever I’m in a reading slump or suffering a major book hangover, I reach for something in the romance genre to get me back into reading. It was working well at the beginning of the month until I got caught up with other commitments and tasks that needed my attention. But I digress… Sincerely, Carter is a story about a boy and a girl, who are best friends for most of their lives, waking up one day realizing that there is something more between them. This was just the kind of light read that I needed after all the books I inhaled in April, and it certainly was an adorable story of friendship and love. Now if you’re sensing a “but”, you are absolutely right, because I felt that with everything I mentioned above the story lacked depth. I also felt like the ending was rushed and it could’ve been a fabulous romance novel if only it wasn’t so predictable.
RESENTMENT BY NICOLE LONDON
Resentment actually wasn’t half bad! I enjoyed the structure of the book and the way the story was divided into three parts, each signifying a different stage in the developing relationship between the two characters. However, a very big factor in me not giving this book anything higher than a 3/5 star rating was that I liked the lead male character much more as a teenager than an adult. I found him to be petty and immature as an adult, even though the author gives reasons for all his actions at the end of the book. That being said, this book is definitely not the worst romance that I’ve read.
BEAUTIFULLY BROKEN THINGS BY SARA BARNARD
If you read my previous post then you will know that I am participating in the Pan PacMillan Young Adult Book Blog Tour for 2016, and the first book featured was Beautifully Broken Things by Sara Barnard, which I reviewed here.
SALT TO THE SEA BY RUTA SEPETYS
You guys, Ruta Sepetys is probably one of my all time favourite authors after reading yet another fantastic historical fiction novel written by her. If you follow me on Bookstagram and Twitter then you will have seen that I finished this book last week and absolutely loved it. I don’t want to write too much about it because I would like to do a full review on this book, but if you loved Between Shades of Gray then this is another MUST read! I wouldn’t be surprised if this book made its way onto my top 5 list for 2016!
As you can see, I read a total of 4 books during the month of May, which is nowhere close to my best reading month. But I am not disappointed, because if I only read Salt to the Sea I would have been more than satisfied – it really is that good!
What was your favourite book for the month of May?
