My guest today is the lovely Puput from Sparkling Letters!! *virtual applause*
So, let’s get the obvious question out of the way – who is Puput? Tell us a bit about the book lover behind the blog.
Hi there, thank you for having me! I’m Puput, a 22 year-old book lover from Indonesia J I just graduated from university last year with a bachelor degree in psychology and am currently trying to figure out what I want to do with my future. I love books (obviously), music, and makeup. Also, I love talking and writing and that’s why I love blogging and I have high hopes of being a published author someday! (Wish me luck?) <3
Everyone has a story and I’m positive you do too. What inspired you to start blogging? And how did you come up with the name for your space?
I’ve always been into blogging ever since I was in middle grade. But it was mostly random and personal stuffs. I stopped blogging after I graduated from high school because I felt like I wasn’t into it anymore and that it was just a phase.
My decision to start blogging again was sudden! Last March I was doing an internship as an HR officer in Jakarta. I lived there for two months and since it was temporary, I didn’t have tv on my place, or any other form of entertainment, so yeah, it was kind of boring. One night I had nothing to do so I decided to sign up on WordPress. It was a spur of the moment decision. Back then I hadn’t decided it to be a book blog, it was just my place to channel my passion and talk about whatever I like; hence the name was ‘Unboxing My Thoughts’.
I used to blog about books, makeup, and personal stuff but soon I realized I ran out of things to talk about makeup but I have sooo many things to say about books! I decided to turn it into a book blog and changed the name to ‘Sparkling Letters’. Sparkling because I love something sparkly and Letters because books are made of them. The rest is just history <3
From one book blogger to another, I know how much time goes into crafting a post that you feel comfortable enough posting for the world to see. Looking back, what was your favourite post to write? (You may list more than one if you want)
Hmm not to be narcissistic but I kinda love everything I write? Hahaha I mean, I’m pretty much a perfectionist when it comes to blogging, so I don’t post things I’m not confident enough with 😛 ANYWAY, I do have a few that I love more than the others!
Review: The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner (in which I flail SO HARD because I love the book so much!!)
Getting a lil personal; what is your biggest achievement to date? Is there a moment you are especially proud of when you look back on all you’ve accomplished so far?
Graduating from university in time with a cumlaude predicate. I mean, I know everyone graduates, but it was still my biggest achievement so far! Since I graduated cumlaude, I was chosen as one of faculty representative to give flowers to my parents during the graduation ceremony. It was… emotional. We all cried and that was like the first time in a loooong while I actually saw my dad cry! What a shocker.
Do you have a bucket list stashed away somewhere with some daring (or more subdued) activities that you’d like to complete? Name 5 items on your list.
Nopeeee. I hate daring activities. I even hate going to a theme park. Why scare yourself to death while you can read books at home? Hahaha but for you adrenaline junkie, I don’t understand you but you’re awesome 😛
However, I do have some life bucket lists :
- Publish a novel
- Go to grad school and study clinical psychology
- Go on a vacation to Europe, Thailand, and Korea
- Get a self-hosting for my blog
Name one of your most cherished life experiences.
Again, I think it was when I graduated from university. Not only it was my biggest achievement, I got to be reunited with a lot of my long lost friends! Friends whom I hadn’t talked to in a long time came to my graduation day and congratulated me and gave me flowers hahaha
What’s some of the best advice you’ve received and who was the wise human who shared this bit of wisdom with you?
There must be a lot of advice I’ve received my whole life but for now I couldn’t think of any! But I guess… it would be this one verse from the Quran that says “Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity.” So you know, every time I feel like I have so many problems on my plate, I know that I get those problems in the first place because I am capable of handling them. And that eventually I will get through it.
Oh also, I think it was my parents who told me!
“HakunaMatata – it means no worries, for the rest of your days.”Do you have a motto in life? If yes, let us know what it is.
I’m not into things like that hehe but I always keep in mind that nothing worth having comes easy!
Let’s talk books for a bit… How did reading become such a big part of your life?
The real question is… when is it not a big part of my life? Because as long as I remember, it’s been like this all along 😛 I just love reading and that’s that. OH but I wrote some posts about my reading kaleidoscope here, in case you’re interested <3
What would you consider your “most reached for” genre? And is there any special reason for this preference?
It’s always between contemporary and fantasy.
I love contemporary because they’re so real and relatable. I can relate to not only the characters, but also the story. I love fantasy because they’re my escape from real life and there are limitless possibilities with them. Most of the time, my preference is based on my mood. Like these past three months I’ve been in the mood for contemporary. But there’s also time when I’m so fed up with real life and that’s when I need my escape in fantasy.
On the other side of the spectrum, what genre do you hardly reach for and why?
Horror and mystery. They’re scary! Hahaha I could watch horror movies but I can’t read the books because my imagination is so vivid. I like getting out of my comfort reading zone but horror and mystery are off limits.
As a major book nerd, I know how overwhelming– or let’s just call it IRRITATING – it can be when someone asks you what your favourite book is because there’s never a black ‘n white answer. So here’s my question: What is your ideal ending for a book?
My ideal ending would be a realistic, but slightly happy ending. I don’t like it when authors end a book neatly because that’s not the way it works in real life, especially when it comes to tough issues like illness. I’m all for happy ending for the characters but when authors wrap everything up in a pretty bow, I become skeptical.
What are some of your most cherished quotes from books?
Would it be annoying if I say I don’t have one?hahaha I really am not a quote person! 😛
What bookish franchise do you tend to fan and fawn over most?
Harry Potter, I guess? It’s the one series that never gets old for me no matter how grown up I am now hahaha I love the books, the movies, the actors and actresses, and pretty much everything!
If you’re anything like me then you’ll have a long list of bookish pet peeves. Can you name one of your biggest bookish pet peeves?
I actually have a separate post talking about my bookish pet peeves here hahaha but lately, there’s this one peeve that bothers me THE MOST! It’s when people shame other people for reading/liking certain books and for rating it low. I mean, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, there’s literally no right or wrong when it comes to reading taste so it annoys me so much that people do this! </3
I think one of the biggest problems us bookish folk face is our never ending TBR pile that gets longer and longer no matter how many books we tick off as ‘read’. What book has been on your TBR the longest?
WHO EVEN KNOWS??! Hahaha but lemme check my Goodreads shelves for a sec.
It’s The Retribution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin… which reminds me that I NEED to finish that series at some point in my life :’)
Stressed Reader or Relaxed Reader?
Favourite Subject in school?
Quiet night in or a night out on the town?
Paperback or EBook?
Paperback (just because I like to hoard books and bookstagram)
Pretty dress or jeans and T-shirt?
Jeans and t-shirt
What advice do you have for anyone who would like to get into psychology?
Hmm my ONLY advice is to keep an open mind. Learning psychology isn’t easy, we learn about OURSELVES and the reason why we become who we are. It could be overwhelming for some people. So, yeah, disarm your prejudice for mental illness and human minds and just keep an open mind 🙂
