It’s no secret that I absolutely adore Instagram. It is a fun, fast and creative way for me to connect with people from all around the world who are just as passionate about books as I am. So when I saw this tag on Molly’s (Mollys Book Nook) blog, I jumped at the chance to take part in it myself.

What’s your Instagram handle? @read_and_seek
How long have you been in the bookstagram community? One and a half years if I’m not mistaken. It started as “the little blog of stuff” when I had a blog on WordPress.com which had the same name. When I moved to my new space at the end of last year, I changed my handle to @read_and_seek.
How many people do you follow? 1016
How many followers do you have? 2520 amazing people! You guys are awesome!
What are your favorite hashtags? #booknerdigans | #bookstagram | #bibliophile
What is your favorite genre of pictures? Since I only take pictures of books, I’m going to amend this question to “What is your bookstagram theme?” In reality, I’m what you’ll call a “Plain Jane”. I don’t like frills and I stay away from too much bling; so I try to have my pictures reflect this. I currently use a white background to give my feed a minimalistic look.
How often do you post? I don’t stick to a strict schedule, but I try to post at least once a day. Depending if I have lots to say or if there are pictures in my camera roll that I really want to share, this could go up to three times a day. I never post more than this.
How often do you check Instagram? Uhm, constantly? Although, there are times when I force myself to take a break.
What’s your favorite filter? I used to be obsessed with the Ludwig filter! But now I do all my editing in VSCO and use the editing tools on Instagram if I really need an extra boost.
iPhone only, purist or rebel? First of all, I’m an Android gal. Secondly, I take all my pictures with my cellphone.
What is the best part about being in this community? Connecting with people from all around the world who share my love for books! Bookstagram has been a space where I can do a little fangirling or talk about bookish things that people around me in real life don’t really care for. It is also lovely to hear about the latest books or to find recommendations from people who I feel like I’ve known forever.
What is the worst part about being in this community? People in the community are really passionate and have no problem voicing their opinions and ideas, which is fantastic – I love knowing what other people are thinking and what triggers such strong emotions. But during these heated moments you’ll find those few who cause more harm than good by posting atrocious comments all because another person doesn’t agree with them. When things get out of hand I like to keep away and post my opinions at a later stage when the anger has simmered and people can listen without projecting or defending; but with respect and understanding. Also, I’m not a big fan of the random “follow for follow” comment.
Three favorite IG accounts currently? Only three? This is impossible!! How about I just share some of my favourites?
@booksandteacups I have a thing for the minimal theme. Add tea, desserts and a cozy white background, and I’m a goner!
@thebibliotheque She has this pink theme that is so beautiful, I always feel inspired when I stumble upon a new post from her in my newsfeed.
@maliemania Malie’s nature shots, where she reads in the mist filled mountains are just sublime. I also love her Youtube channel.
@theloonytuney Emily’s pastel hardback collection is so pretty!!!
@madamereadsalot Michelle’s shelves and bookish merch collection is a booklover’s actual dream! I have no idea how she manages to leave the house with a library like that!
@bookmarauder Another bookstagrammer whose shelves are my ultimate goals. I also love that even though Mara have 93K followers, she still takes the time to respond to my comments.
@awritereview Because I am always going to fan over South African accounts, but also because Tina’s feed is killing it!
@under.the.midnight.sky Abdeah is a Cape Town gal, just like me, so we get to share news about book sales, events and local bookstores all the time! It also helps that her account is gorgeous!
@emdawgreads His feed is so light and fairytale like, I always leave feeling more positive after scrolling through his pictures to clear my head of all the noise.
I know there are many more accounts that I missed here so maybe I should leave this list open and add more when I think of them…
Are you on bookstagram? What are some of your favourite accounts? And let me know what you love about the bookstagram community.
