Yesterday I started reading Mr. Penumbra’s 24-hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan – a book for all bookworms btw – in the hopes that my mind will be taken off Harry Potter for a while, until I can get a paperback copy of The Deathly Hallows for my bookshelf; even though I have the e-book at hand. And then last night I slipped and fell head first into chapter one of the final instalment of Harry Potter… I have zero self control!! Anyways… it hit me that after such a long time of being completely overwhelmed to crack open The Philosopher’s Stone, I’ve reached the end of this amazing journey. This got me thinking of all the other books on my TBR list that I am too intimidated by to read, which includes:
THE LORD OF THE RINGS BY J. R. R. TOLKIEN: The Lord of the Rings has been on my reading list for a very long time because it is considered as a ‘book you need to read before you die’. For some reason though, I’ve always been too intimidated to read these books. I haven’t watched any of the movies so it would be a completely new experience for me.
A GAME OF THRONES BY GEORGE R. R. MARTIN: I watched about half of the very first episode of the series and could not continue; but I still want to read the books. I am just too intimidated by this book series though. I’m not sure if it’s because of the length or amount of books, but I am not making much of an effort to read them any time soon.
ANYTHING WRITTEN BY CASSANDRA CLARE: The Mortal Instrument, Infernal Devices and Dark Artifices series are all really popular in the bookish world so naturally I am eager to read them too. But I am too overwhelmed by all the books that I would be committing myself to read if I start her series. However, the first book of The Dark Artifices series was published on Tuesday this week so I might just have a go at that one!
CLASSIC BOOKS: These include Tess of the d’Urbervilles, Wuthering Heights and Oliver Twist to name but a few. I am always so overwhelmed by classic novels, probably because people always seem to find hidden meanings in the work, and sometimes I find it difficult to do the same. I have been making more of an effort to read some classics though, so hopefully by the end of the year I will have scratched a few off my reading list.
PERCY JACKSON & THE OLYMPIANS BY RICK RIORDAN: I only recently started reading books from the fantasy genre, so as you can imagine, I have LOTS of catching up to do. Percy Jackson has been recommended to me so many times when I started exploring the genre, but I’ve been too intimidated by the series to pick it up. I think it is overwhelming to start a series that has so many books under the name.
TERRY PRATCHETT: It says a lot when a bookstore dedicates an entire shelf to one author. Firstly it says that the author is brilliant, and secondly it says that the author wrote a sh*t load of books! For this reason, I am too overwhelmed to start reading Terry Pratchett books even though so many people recommend them to me all the time.
I realized that by being intimidated by these books, I am postponing what could possibly be incredible reading experiences that are just waiting to be enjoyed. So from now on, I am going to be reading the books that pulls me from my comfort zone, it is the only way to learn something new…
Are there any books you haven’t read because you feel too intimidated to do so?
