I am starting to develop a love/hate relationship with book series. I mean, I enjoy reading the ones that are really good (*cough*HARRY POTTER*cough*) but then at the same time I feel like there are so many books out there that I could be reading instead. Not to mention that books are incredibly expensive here in South Africa, so if I can buy 3 stand alones instead of 3 books from a series, then I will do that instead! But then every so often, while browsing through Instagram or Goodreads, I will get caught in the trap and start the latest hyped about series, and then the rest of my tbr list is shot to pot until I complete the books in that series. Here are a few book series I haven’t completed yet (and hope to, real soon):
THE LUNAR CHRONICLES BY MARISSA MEYER: I really liked this series. When I completed Cress last year I could barely wait for Winter to be released. But by the time it reached South African shores, I got distracted by other interesting reads and just never got around to grabbing myself a copy of Winter. I still have to read Fairest and Stars Above too. I think I am going to buy Winter next month so that I can finally complete the series.
SHATTER ME BY TAHEREH MAFI: I started this series because a) the covers are stunning, b) everyone on bookstagram adores the series, and c) the first book (and only one I read) was really cheap last year, so I bought it on a whim. Now I need to read the rest of the series; but the books are pricey and hard to find in SA bookstores.
DARKNESS SERIES BY CLAIRE CONTRERAS: I read the first book in the series, There is no Light in Darkness, a few years ago at a time when I was so over cliff hangers. When I started book one, I didn’t know it was going to be a duology, so when I reached the last few pages and realized the story will continue I was pretty pissed. Even though I completely enjoyed the story line and characters, I felt disappointed that it wasn’t a stand alone.
BURYING WATER BY K.A. TUCKER: If there is one thing that makes a book enjoyable for me, then it has got to be strong, interesting characters. For me, a book needs to have characters that I wouldn’t mind reading more about. But I feel like some series are stretched out further than what is needed, and then I become bored with the story line and lose interest in the rest of the books. Which is exactly what happened with this book series, unfortunately. Sometimes a little mystery goes further than knowing everything about each and every character. When I reach a point where I don’t really care about the characters anymore, then I will rather invest my time in new characters and uncharted worlds.
RED QUEEN BY VICTORIA AVEYARD: When Red Queen was released last year, it was all the rage. Every one recommended it and raved about it online. I eventually succumbed to “peer pressure” when my sister in law demanded that I read it so that she can have someone to talk about the book with. I enjoyed Red Queen, but I felt like the sequel took too long to be released, so by the time it was published all my excitement vanished. I’ve also been reading a lot more fantasy books lately so I am kind of bored with the whole super powers thing… I want to say that I will read Glass Sword soon but I won’t, because there are over enough books I still need to catch up on reading!
What book series have you left unfinished? And do you notice a pattern in the reasons behind you leaving a book series half way read?
